The Dresden-Wrocław-Express was a cross-border regional express from DB Regio and Przewozy Regionalne , which connected the Saxon state capital Dresden with the Lower Silesian voivodship capital Wroclaw as an international train connection . On his journey he served, among others, the train stations Dresden-Neustadt, Bautzen, Görlitz, Zgorzelec, Zgorzelec Miasto, Węgliniec, Bolesławiec and Legnica.

As financing by the Lower Silesian Voivodeship was no longer provided , traffic on the Polish side - and with it the cross-border traffic - was discontinued from March 1, 2015.

From December 13, 2015, the connection was offered again in cooperation with Koleje Dolnośląskie as the Trilex Express for three timetable years. The previous name "Dresden-Wrocław-Express" was no longer communicated for the connection, which has since been significantly slower and sometimes serves all subway stations.

history

2008-2014

Dresden-Wrocław-Express in Wrocław Główny (2014)

The RE 1 went into operation with the timetable change on December 14, 2008. However, for the time being it only operated between Dresden and Görlitz, as the railcars had not yet been converted and approved for operation in the Polish network. The first continuous, scheduled train from Dresden to Breslau started on March 1, 2009. It took about three hours and 33 minutes. Since its inception, the number of travelers between Dresden and Breslau has increased. While around 12,000 passengers used the cross-border transfer connection in 2008, the direct connection increased the number of passengers from March 1, 2009 to March 1, 2010 to 46,000. In September 2009 it was reported in the press that the operator of the train on the Polish route section - Przewozy Regionalne - is planning an extension of the RE 100 to Opole ( Opole ). However, this was not implemented.

From December 12, 2010, travel time was reduced by around 15 minutes, so that the train was only on the move for around three hours and 15 minutes.

In the second year of operation, the number of passengers rose again significantly by over 20% to around 56,000 passengers per year

In 2011 the number of passengers increased by 8%. A total of 4,665 more passengers traveled on this train than in the previous year. Throughout the year, 59,631 passengers crossed the border near Görlitz with this train.

From the timetable change in December 2012, the RE 100 was integrated into the line of RE 1 Dresden Hbf - Görlitz by extending three pairs of trains from Görlitz to Wroclaw. The train stopped at other stations on the way. Already during the Landesgartenschau in Löbau 2012 a hold of the Regional Express has been in Löbau furnished.

From December 14, 2014, the Vogtlandbahn (today “Die Länderbahn”) provided the transport services on the line under the name trilex . Because the Vogtlandbahn vehicles were not approved for Poland, DB Regio operated the cross-border journeys as a subcontractor. Since then, the trains have been running on the German side as TLX, the train type on the Polish side was still an RE .

2015-2018

On February 20, 2015 it was announced that the connection would be discontinued without replacement on March 1 of the same year after six years. The reason for this are cuts in the funds for operating the line on the Polish side. The continuous trains had been ordered by the two German transport associations ZVON and VVO involved until December 2018. A replacement had not been set up, so that the way between the two border stations had to be covered on foot or by city bus. The TLX 1 trains on the Dresden – Görlitz connection continued to run on the German side at the same departure times of the former Dresden-Wrocław Express.

The media reported on September 11, 2015 that a new start of operations was planned for the 2016 timetable year. On the other hand, the Federal Foreign Office only announced on the same day that "the negotiations for the resumption of the direct connection between Dresden and Wroclaw from the 2015 timetable change are well advanced". On November 6, 2015, the actors involved on the German side jointly announced that a corresponding “draft contract between DB Regio and the Polish transport company Koleje Dolnośląskie (KD) has now been finalized” and that the contract is now expected to be signed. Continuous traffic between Dresden and Breslau was resumed on December 13, 2015; DB Regio is again providing the vehicles and operates on the German side as a subcontractor of the Länderbahn, on the Polish side as a partner of (KD). According to the Polish media, the vehicle leasing contract between DB Regio Südost and KD should be signed as soon as the objection period required under procurement law has expired, and should then apply for three years until the timetable change in December 2018. On December 9, 2015, the necessary contracts were actually signed.

The Polish side turned for renting the vehicles of DB Regio over three years a total of 21.86 million zloty on (about 4.977 million euros, the exchange rate of 28 August 2020).

Since the timetable change in December 2016, the line has been referred to as RE1 on the German side and as D10 in Poland.

With the timetable change on December 9, 2018, the connection was shortened to the Dresden – Węgliniec route and thus effectively abandoned. In Węgliniec there has since been a connection to a regional train of the Koleje Dolnośląskie (KD) to and from Wroclaw. The reason for this is - in addition to the contract, which is expiring anyway - the refusal of the Polish contracting parties to continue driving diesel multiple units under catenary on a route that has been expanded for 160 km / h.

business

Class 642 railcars in Wroclaw

Up until March 1, 2015, three pairs of TLX / RE 1 trains ran daily from Dresden via Görlitz to Breslau and back. The trains extended to Poland have been integrated into the two-hour service of the TLX / RE 1 Dresden – Görlitz since the timetable change in December 2012. Before that, the three pairs of trains Dresden – Görlitz – Breslau ran in addition to the RE 1, were marketed as RE 100 and only stopped at the most important intermediate stations.

Since December 13, 2015, only three pairs of trains have been running on weekdays, and two pairs of trains have been offered on Sundays.

Local railcars of the class 642 from DB Regio Südost , which were equipped for traffic on Polish territory, were always used. For this purpose, these railcars received LED lighting, an additional signal horn and the corresponding train protection systems as well as Polish train radio.

Railway lines

On the way between Dresden Hbf and Wrocław Główny, the Dresden-Wrocław-Express used the following routes:

The RE 1 covered around 270 kilometers between Dresden Hbf and Wrocław Główny ( Breslau Hbf ). Since the timetable change in December 2014, the scheduled travel time from Dresden to Wroclaw has been 3 hours and 24 minutes and in the opposite direction 3 hours and 21 minutes. This results in an average cruising speed of around 80 km / h. Since the resumption of traffic, the travel time has been between 3:29 hours and 3:56 hours.

Tariff

On the German side, the RE1 runs through two transport associations. Between Dresden Hbf and Arnsdorf the tariff of the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (VVO) applies, between Bischofswerda and Görlitz the tariff of the Verkehrsverbund Oberlausitz-Lower Silesia (ZVON) applies . For cross-border journeys there are, among other things, the Dresden-Wrocław-Spezial and the Euro-Neisse ticket .
