The Barth train station is the train station of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania town of Barth . It is located at route kilometers 30.29 of the Darßbahn Velgast – Barth– Prerow and has been owned by the Usedomer Bäderbahn GmbH (UBB) since the 2002/2003 timetable change , which has also taken over the traffic on the Velgast – Barth line from Deutsche Bahn . From 1895 to 1969 the Stralsund – Barth – Damgarten line , a meter- gauge line of the Franzburger Kreisbahnen , also ran via Barth, which had its own station building. In addition, a three-track port railway operated to Barther port. In addition, a standard-gauge line branched off the Darßbahn to Barth Airfield , the predecessor of today 's Barth Airport . With the exception of the Velgast – Barth section of the Darßbahn, all other routes and sections have now been closed.

history

The branch line Velgast - Barth was opened on July 1st, 1888 without any celebrations . At the end of the line, the Prussian State Railways had a modest station building with an attached goods shed and a free-standing toilet built. The northern extension was later expanded to accommodate an inn .

Since May 5, 1895, the trains of the meter-gauge east-west cross connection to Barth, which had been built by the Franzburger Kreisbahnen , ran from Stralsund to Damgarten . The Velgaster standard gauge track was crossed from Barth to Damgarten on a 25 meter long bridge .

The management of the district railways took their seat in Barth, and the resources were concentrated there. From 1912 to 1914 a workshop was built and the connection points were also served by the narrow-gauge locomotives with the help of a third rail .

Other high-rise buildings were built: a two-tier locomotive shed , a railway workers' house, a railcar shed around 1930 and a building for the railway maintenance office . The seaside resorts of Prerow and Zingst could only be reached by steamboat and therefore wanted a rail connection. They received this through the extension of the route from Velgast to the Baltic Sea resort of Prerow, which opened on December 1, 1910 . This section had to be dismantled as reparation to the USSR by 1947. Since April 12, 1966, the rebuilt track up was Bresewitz especially for the shooting range operated Zingst. In addition, the route was also used to park freight trains. The line was closed again in mid-1996.

Rail traffic boosted the economy in Barth, supplied the Baltic seaside resorts and also took holiday guests to Zingst and Prerow in special trains, and after 1945 only to Barth. The Deutsche Reichsbahn met this need with up to two express train connections to Barth during the bathing season and sometimes a couple of express trains in winter . In addition to local transport , two pairs of local goods trains with wagons for the sidings of the sugar factory, the port and the rural trading cooperative ran every day .

The meter-gauge line Stralsund Stadtwald - Barth was closed on November 30, 1968. After the Hermannshof - Ribnitz-Damgarten Nord line was closed at the end of 1965, there was still traffic from Barth to Hermannshof, which was discontinued on January 3, 1971.

In 1967 the station was a through and connecting station , although almost only military trains went to Bresewitz , but all types of trains went to Velgast. During this time, Barth was the terminus of the narrow-gauge trains from Stralsund and Damgarten.

In 1992 the locomotive operation site was closed and in 1996 the semicircular shed and the workshop were demolished. In 1994 there were train crossings at the station, several platforms and shunting was carried out.

At the regular timetable change for 2002/2003 on December 15, 2002, Deutsche Bahn AG (DB) switched off the overhead line , which was finally dismantled in 2005. At the same time, Usedomer Bäderbahn GmbH (UBB) , a subsidiary of DB, took over management of the Velgast – Barth route. In this context, the Barth train station was downgraded from a train station to a stop and partly renewed. The formerly extensive track systems of the standard-gauge railway were only partially removed and are now an industrial wasteland .

Reception building

The modest reception building with an attached goods shed and a free-standing toilet was built by the Prussian State Railways . The northern extension was later expanded to accommodate an inn . Today, the building, which is quite stately by today's standards, houses a travel center for the Usedomer Bäderbahn and a restaurant .

Track systems

In front of the station building is track 1 with the house platform , on track 2, which is now overgrown, another platform was filled. A bypass track followed, and next to it the track on the loading road with the head and side ramps. The 210 meter long loading route was later given a second track. Additional tracks for freight traffic were located directly at the goods shed and south of the station building. Today only the track on the house platform still exists, all other tracks have meanwhile been dismantled or are now in an industrial wasteland .

Signal boxes

The signal box Bhf or W 2 , which was the seat of the dispatcher, was attached to the station building . In the 1950s, it was moved to the Bst signal box (mechanical, Jüdel design) opposite the depot or the deployment site and was designated as B 1 .

Narrow gauge

The systems of the narrow-gauge railways were on the east side of the station. The narrow-gauge railways were also given a stately reception building by today's standards, which is the only remnant of the former Franzburger Kreisbahnen in Barth, and a locomotive shed .

The former station building and the locomotive shed for the narrow-gauge railways have been empty for several years and make a very desolate impression. These buildings are to be demolished as part of the planned redesign of the Barth train station. So far this has not happened due to problems with the owner.
