Glencorse Parish Church

The Glencorse Parish Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Penicuik in the Council Area Midlothian . In 1985 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. The church is still in use as such.

history

After the parish grew steadily , including through the expansion of the Glencorse Barracks , the former parish church of the Parish , the Glencorse Old Parish Church , became too small. For this reason, the Scottish architect Robert Rowand Anderson was commissioned to plan a larger new building in the 1880s . To cover the costs of the nearby donated Bush House living Robert Trotter 400 £. He also donated an area that still serves as a cemetery today. The Glencorse Parish Church was built between 1883 and 1887. The stained glass windows were installed in 1895 and 1918 respectively. While oil lamps were originally used for lighting, electric light has now been installed.

description

The Glencorse Parish Church is located on the northern edge of the city, not far from its predecessor. It has details of neo-Gothic architecture, but is not entirely designed in this style. The masonry is made of light-colored sandstone . Only the building edges and openings are set off with pale stone blocks. The bell tower protrudes to the left of the nave on the east-facing front. At its foot there is the simple, pointed entrance portal in the middle . The tower is also relatively simple, with slotted windows and lancet windows on the upper floors. It closes with a gable roof . On the gable side to the right of the tower there is a flat tracery made up of five lancet windows. The three-axis long nave is designed with lancet windows and simple buttresses . The baptismal font was found in the former parish church during the renovation in 1811. It could originally have come from the Chapel of St Kathrine , which was flooded when the Glencorse Reservoir was dammed.
