The British Class 360 vehicles are four- and five-part electric multiple units (EMU) from the Desiro vehicle concept developed by Siemens Transportation Systems .

Manufacturer and operator

The manufacturer is Siemens Transportation Systems, in whose plant in Krefeld-Uerdingen all vehicles were produced. The customer acceptance took place in the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center . The operator is the British railway company First Group , with class 360/1 operating for the end customer National Express Group and class 360/2 for Heathrow Connect .

Vehicles and routes

Four five-car class 360/2 vehicles have been in use on the Heathrow Connect line between London Heathrow Airport and Paddington since 2003 . Another train was added later as a five-piece. For this purpose, another intermediate car with an additional 73 seats was used in the originally four-part train. This new five-part car has been in operation since autumn 2006.

The 21 four-car class 360/1 vehicles have been in use between Liverpool Street , Ipswich and Clacton since June 2005 , replacing the old British class 312 here .

All vehicles are air-conditioned, have video surveillance, a standard toilet and an optical and acoustic passenger information system. In 2010, the specialist magazine Modern Railways recognized the Desiro UK 360/2 as the best electric multiple unit with the Silver Spanner (silver wrench).
