The Siemens Desiro City is a series of electric local transport multiple units from the Desiro family by Siemens Mobility , which have been used in passenger service in Great Britain since 2016 . The vehicles bear the series designation British Rail Class 700 , 707 and 717 .

technology

The manufacturer pursues a motor vehicle concept, so that all traction components that belong together are installed in one vehicle each and not distributed over several. Depending on the configuration, around half of the cars are driven. The trains are manufactured in the Uerdingen wagon factory in Krefeld - Uerdingen owned by Siemens Mobility .

While overhead lines with 25 kV, 50 Hz AC voltage exist on electrified lines in the majority of Great Britain, busbars with 750 V DC voltage are installed in the south-west of England . The Desiro City multiple units are offered both as a single-system variant for one of these power systems and as a dual-system variant.

commitment

Thameslink

Govia Thameslink Railway has been using 60 eight-car and 55 twelve-car class 700 trains at Thameslink since 2016 .

For the modernization of the fleet, the British government at the time announced the two remaining applicants, Bombardier Transportation UK Ltd with VeloCity and Siemens Plc with Cross London Trains . In June 2011 the UK Department for Transport appointed the consortium Cross London Trains Ltd. (XLT), consisting of Siemens Project Ventures GmbH, Innisfree Pfi Secondary Fund Ltd. and 3i Infrastructure plc. the preferred bidder , the preferred bidder . The contract was signed on June 27, 2013. The order value for the vehicles is around 1.8 billion euros (1.6 billion pounds ).

At peak times, starting in September 2015, two cars per day or more than one train per week should be completed. The cars were to be transferred in groups of four to the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center and the multiple units were to be formed there. In the spring of 2015, seven multiple units were in the test center, where they completed test drives on the small test ring. Train drivers from the future operator visited the test center to familiarize themselves with the new vehicles. The delivery was planned for the period between December 2015 and June 2018, the commercial commissioning of the first train in February 2016.

Originally, the trains were supposed to run under the guidance of ETCS Level 2 (high-performance block, with signals) from 2017 . For various reasons, however, this goal had to be postponed to 2018. Also from 2018 - for the first time with ETCS - an automatic train operation (ATO) will be carried out, according to plan with 24 trains per hour and direction. National packages (package 44) should include stopping time and driving recommendations as well as information on selective door control. The number of seats on the section in the heart of London is to be expanded by around 80 percent by 2019.

The trains are maintained in two depots. Among other things, Siemens built a new depot in Three Bridges for 340 million British pounds. Siemens has also been entrusted with maintenance for an initial ten years at two new depots in Crawley and Hornsey in north-east London. An option to extend the maintenance contract to 30 years was agreed.

South Western

South West Trains ordered 30 five-car multiple units for the London suburban services between London Waterloo and Windsor. The first trains went into operation in August 2017, just days before the network was taken over by South Western Railway (SWR).

Even before the trains went into service, South Western Railway announced that it would replace them with Aventra multiple units from Bombardier Transportation . The released Desiro City multiple units are to be loaned to Southeastern .

Great Northern

Since 2019, a total of 25 six-car class 717 units have been used in London suburban traffic from Moorgate station to Welwyn Garden City , Hertford and Watton-at-Stone . The first units went into operation on March 25, 2019.

A special feature of this version are the emergency exit doors at the end of the vehicles, which are necessary to be used on the Northern City Line , a former subway route.
