The CFR series 96 is a local multiple unit from the Desiro vehicle concept developed by Siemens Mobility (formerly Siemens Transportation Systems) . The operator is the Romanian State Railways (CFR).

Siemens Mobility received the order in April 2002, at whose plant in Krefeld - Uerdingen part of the production took place. Commissioning took place in the test center in Wegberg - Wildenrath .

The first train was handed over to CFR on December 19, 2002 in Uerdingen. Slightly more than half of the 120 two-part multiple units were produced locally in Romania , the last of which were delivered in 2007.

Technically, the trains are almost identical to the DB version of the 642 series .

operation area

The multiple units run around Bucharest and between the cities of Arad , Oradea and Cluj . They are also used on various local transport routes.
