The vehicles of the BD® series 30 and the BD® series 31 are fully air-conditioned, electric regional multiple units from the Desiro vehicle concept developed by Siemens Transportation Systems . The operator is the Bulgarian State Railway BDŽ. The difference between series 30 and 31 is the number of intermediate cars. A class 30 train consists of three parts, two end cars and one intermediate car. The units of the 31 series, however, consist of four parts, they have two intermediate cars.
Manufacturer and operator
The manufacturer is Siemens Transportation Systems, in whose plant in Krefeld - Uerdingen the assembly takes place. More than 60 percent of the construction was relocated to Prague and Ostrava . The order was already received in August 2005, which resulted from an option of the contract for 25 Desiro Classics of the BDŽ series 10 . Commissioning is carried out in the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center . From there on December 11, 2007, the first two three-part units left the plant for Bulgaria, where they arrived in Varna about a week later . Delivery of all trains should be completed in mid-2008. The home station of these multiple units is Varna, where they will be maintained by Siemens for twelve years according to the maintenance contract.
Currently (2011) these trains are used in large parts of Bulgaria, they also serve train services from Sofia and Plovdiv.
