Siemens Desiro

The Siemens Desiro is a family of rail vehicles designed by Siemens Mobility for regional, local and S-Bahn traffic. The artificial word Desiro is from English to desire ( wish, desire ) is derived. Desiro is a registered trademark of Siemens AG.

The modular railcar concept stands for variable train configurations with diesel or electric drives in single or multiple units . Production takes place mainly in the Siemens factory in Krefeld - Uerdingen , commissioning and customer acceptance in the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center . The Desiro Classic started its first scheduled operation in 1999 as the 642 series for Deutsche Bahn . Other Desiro variants operate in several European countries and in California.

Desiro Classic

The Desiro Classic is the original variant of the Desiro, which was manufactured between 1998 and 2008. It was offered both as a diesel multiple unit and as an electric multiple unit.

Desiro UK

The Desiro UK with its special vehicle gauge was specially developed for use in Great Britain .

On April 24, 2001, the contract for the delivery of 1200 Desiro UK cars for Great Britain was signed. With a volume of 2.5 billion euros, it was the largest order in the history of Siemens Mobility to date. The first train ( class 450 ) was presented a year later, on April 24, 2002, at the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center. The Desiro City will be the successor to the Desiro UK.

Based on the British Class 360/2, two versions of the Desiro UK were built for the Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) in Bangkok .

Desiro City

As the successor to the Desiro UK, Siemens presented the Desiro City on July 23, 2009 . A first order for 1,140 cars was signed in June 2013 for the Thameslink network in southern England.

Desiro ML

The Desiro MainLine is an electrically operated Desiro variant for the Central European market, which is intended for regional and S-Bahn traffic. In June 2016, Siemens presented the Mireo as the successor to the Desiro ML.

Desiro double deck

The first model of the Desiro Double Deck variant was the DB series 445 test vehicle called Meridian . The vehicle finally received EBA approval, but was still not put into service and not built in series; it has since been dismantled again. From 2006 to 2008, the SBB RABe 514, a four-part double-decker multiple unit for the Zurich S-Bahn, was produced in series.

Desiro HC

The Desiro HC (HC for High Capacity ) was presented at Innotrans 2014. It consists of powered, single-story end cars and double-story, non-powered intermediate cars.
