history
The Escondido area was originally settled by the Luiseño tribe, who built campsites and villages along the stream that flows through the area. They gave the place the name Mehel-om-pom-pavo .
Spain controlled the country from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, and during that time it established numerous missions to convert the local indigenous people. When Mexico declared its independence from Spain, the area was divided into large ranches .
In 1846 the Battle of San Pasqual was fought southeast of Escondido as part of the Mexican-American War .
