history

The Colonnades 1880

In the mid-1870s, the Colonnaden was a private street owned by the Wex brothers. The Wilhelminian style floor development was carried out around 1880. When the street broke through, the last remains of the city theater on Gänsemarkt disappeared .

The construction of the underground ( KellJung line ) in 1930, which runs under the street, was delayed by legal appeals from local retailers. They demanded a line through Dammtorstrasse. The feared decline in sales then exceeded all expectations.

In 1974 the street became a pedestrian zone . At the same time, an escalator and footbridge were built over the esplanade at the north end. This bridge led through a small shopping passage on the first floor of the former Hotel Esplanade (Phrix House, today Casino Esplanade) to Dag Hammarskjöld Bridge at Dammtor and Dammtor train station .

Since January 4, 1978, the spacious, neo-renaissance-style houses with their varied, heavily ornamented facades have been listed as historical monuments.

A fountain by Detlef Birgfeld was set up in 1976 at Gustav Mahler-Platz .

In 2005 the pedestrian bridge on the Esplande was demolished. In addition, a complete redesign took place during this time (trees felled, new surface and bollards) in 2 sections. In the northern part of the street, a zone for outdoor dining was created. In the middle, between the State Opera and the corner on Gustav-Mahler -Platz , a striking new building was built. The southern part was partially reopened to traffic.
