Detlef Birgfeld

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Detlef Birgfeld (born October 10, 1937 in Rostock ) is a German visual artist . Birgfeld experienced national and international recognition for his artistic work mainly from the 1960s to the early 1990s.

life and work

Detlef Birgfeld is a second nephew of Eduard Birgfeld ; his father Gunter Birgfeld (1901–1963) and Eduard Birgfeld (1887–1939) were cousins. Detlef Birgfeld was married, has two sons and lives in Berlin.

He is the third of five children of the dentist Gunter Birgfeld and the housewife Charlotte Birgfeld. He grew up in his native Rostock. In 1950 Detlef Birgfeld and his sister moved to their father, who had moved from prisoner of war to Hamburg , the rest of the family followed until 1951. Here, after graduating from high school (1957), he studied medicine and Romance studies from 1957 to 1959 at the request of his father at the University of Hamburg . and in 1958 began parallel studies at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg (HfbK) in the sculpture class with Hans Martin Ruwoldt and Gustav Seitz, among others . The meeting with Eduardo Paolozzi was influential in his artistic development . Birgfeld studied with him when Paolozzi was a guest lecturer at the HfbK for two semesters in 1961/1962, visited him in the summer of 1961 for two months in London and stayed there again from 1963–1964 for eleven months, during which he became Paolozzi's personal assistant.

1967–1968 Birgfeld taught at the Werkkunstschule and master school for fashion in Hamburg. From 1969 to 1983 Birgfeld was an assistant at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg , from 1983 until his retirement in 1998 he taught as a professor for drawing at the University of Pforzheim in the Faculty of Design .

Birgfeld often stayed abroad in search of artistic inspiration, including Stromboli (1958, 1959), London (1961, 1963/1964), Greece (1962), Turkey (1962), Paris (1967, 1968 / 1969), on the Cyclades (1970s), from the late 1970s mainly in New York, Chicago and Boston. Although a trained sculptor, Birgfeld developed into an assembly and collage artist in the 1960s and 1970s . Birgfeld himself outlined his development in May 1975 in a comparable way:

“Based on studies of nature, figural sculptures were created from 1958 to 1963 (...). Hollow bodies constructed from cardboard, which were later filled with plaster, gave the impetus to assemble sculptures from individual parts. [...] The further development led to considerations to place the found plastic solutions functionally in spatial situations. (...) Today I try to summarize combinations of objects, rooms and situations in scenarios (...) (...). "

In addition to several works for public space, which Birgfeld carried out mainly in Hamburg, where they can still be seen, The Profilierungskarussell is the work that has received the most attention. It was created from around 1975 until its first exhibition at the Hamburger Kunsthalle in 1981. The starting point are found objects, “from travel bags to motorcycles, from Chinese kites to dyes from Manhattan”, which Birgfeld “not only for this work, but primarily for itself sake for almost 20 years ”. To classify the installation, Birgfeld stated in 1978:

“The profiling carousel, developed over the last three years, reflects my artistic career in many different ways. Figures and objects surrounding them are seen as ensembles that - put together - form larger groups. This created interrelationships between objects, objects, figures and spaces. "

In 1980 Birgfeld added that it was "a parody of the art world". Appropriately formulated Peter Matthew "lost property from the dump symbolize the pursuit of happiness and the vanity fair." In 1980 the artwork of 100,000 was about a possible purchase of D-Mark discussed by the City of Hamburg. Birgfeld's fountain sculpture, erected in 1978 in downtown Hamburg at today's Gustav-Mahler-Platz, combines abstract geometric shapes with a naturalistically designed seated female figure, which marks the fountain's summit and wears a hood reminiscent of the 19th century. According to Birgfeld, the design of this fountain is “a concession to the viewer”.

In 1991 Der Spiegel reported on a failed art trade between Birgfeld and the city of Buchholz in the Nordheide . After that, the city wanted to purchase a sculpture from Birgfeld for a new hall building at a price of DM 130,000, "in which 'experiences from years of discussions with material and form' are translated into art". After a model of the sculpture was shown in the Nordheider Wochenblatt , a reader realized that “the model was a puzzle that was available from toy stores for ten marks”. The city then canceled the art purchase.
