Mama Baer and Commissioner Hjuler

Mama Baer (born October 29, 1981 in Niebüll as Andrea Katharina Ingeborg Göthling , married Hjuler) and Commissioner Hjuler (born June 30, 1967 in Flensburg as Detlev Hjuler) are a German artist duo. They have been working together since 1999 in the fields of music , painting , assemblage , collage , installation , performance , experimental film and conceptual art . They are representatives of the youngest Fluxus movement and have been permanent members of the NO! Art movement since 2009 .

life and work

Detlev Hjuler grew up in Medelby near Flensburg and, after graduating from secondary school, trained in the middle service of the police. He caught up with the Abitur, then switched to the senior service and studied at the Altenholz University of Applied Sciences. Hjuler worked as a police officer in Flensburg until May 2013, and has only worked as an artist since then.

Mama Baer and Commissioner Hjuler, also Commissioner Hjuler and Frau, have already released more than 300 different recordings and appeared at festivals in Europe; their short films have been shown at various short film festivals and have been exhibiting worldwide since 2006. They come into contact with the NO! art movement at an early stage, since September 2009 both artists in this group around Boris Lurie have been involved .

Both work together and complement each other, resulting in mostly mixed-media works that combine painting, collage and sculpture, often also containing movable components or organic substances, then mostly as hand-made wooden boxes with a plexiglass cover.

Until 2011, Commissioner Hjuler worked with a figure made from bread dough and dried, which he called the bread cat and for which he created his own abstract universe. The assemblages behind Plexiglas created for this purpose are intended as a comic-like sequence of individual events. So Commissioner Hjuler developed a religion and a complete state and social system around this fictional figure, which in an absurd way repeatedly creates a critical relationship to people. Bread Cat ends up in the war against the superior opponent Votzekatze, a collage of three vaginas as a silhouette of the three-dimensional bread cat. The Marketing Club Carinthia and the Kleine Zeitung Austria chose his bread cat work Enter Konsum as the winner of an art tender on the occasion of the Innovation Congress 2010.

When he was in charge of the police, he regularly offended with his actions, so that up to his resignation from the police force there were repeated procedures with written orders or prohibitions with countersigning. Together with Albrecht / d. he regularly used this correspondence to produce leporellos. Points of contention were the use of official clothing and official correspondence in assemblages, the wearing of uniforms in short films, and the later use of tape recordings (siren) from mission trips in music recordings. Particular points of contention were the re-shooting of a complete episode of the Raumpatrouille Orion series with uniformed colleagues and the refusal to read an official rule assessment in order to then declare it as an objet trouvé with the status "unread" as a work of art . Unlike Commissioner Hjuler, the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of the Interior saw not reading a document as processing in the artistic sense.

The main field of activity of the two is still experimental music. The covers for long-playing records are often hand-made unique items and assemblages, which are often the subject of exhibitions. The British music magazine The Wire selected their CD Asylum Lunaticum among the 15 best albums of 2009 in the field of experimental music. Since 2014, Commissioner Hjuler has been putting together an extensive series of sound carriers for the record label Psych.KG from Euskirchen, which he calls FLUXUS +/-, artists such as Milan Knížák , Peter Weibel , Jonathan Meese & Tim Berresheim , Jo Kondo , Steuart Liebig , David Toop , Maja Ratkje , Steve Dalachinsky, Matthew Shipp , Assif Tsahar , Vernon Reid , Susie Ibarra , Mars Pharoah Ford, Karlheinz Essl , Hartmut Geerken , Charlemagne Palestine , Anna Homler , Jürgen O. Mama Baer and Kommissar Hjuler appeared as fictional characters in a novel by the author Karl P. Gaul ( In prison with Kommissar Hjuler and Mama Baer ) With the author, they appeared at various festivals after publication and presented readings as experimental and often improvised performances, the so-called action readings.

Mama Baer and Inspector Hjuler have two children together and live rather secluded in Flensburg. Mama Baer was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in 2015 , and Commissioner Hjuler has been suffering from epilepsy with grand mal seizures as a result of a cerebral haemorrhage since 2011 .

Bread Cat (Collaborations)

In the Bread Cat Collaborations concept, cats formed from bread dough by Commissioner Hjuler were worked on by 194 participating artists around the world in their own working style, Commissioner Hjuler organized exhibitions on this in the years 2010 to 2013.

Fluxporn

In the fluxporn concept , Commissioner Hjuler works with porn actresses such as B. Lena Nitro , Samira Summer , Kitty Blair , Annika Bond , Violet Storm, Texas Patti , Leonie Lingua, Elly Darnell, Josy Fine, Medea Fox, Kiara Kane and Taya Lamai, as well as the Playboy photographer Marco Pallotti from Santa Monica. A project that has hardly anything to do with pornography, because the actresses act here together with Commissioner Hjuler as creative minds in the production of assemblages. So z. B. a functional and approx. 50 cm tall Tipp-Kick figure depicting the former soccer player Samira Summer. The Catholic educated Texas Patti and Commissioner Hjuler created Madonna statues with worn underwear. With Annika Bond, comics came into being in the form of assemblages.

(SHMF - 019 + ...)

In the concept (SHMF - 019 + ...) Commissioner Hjuler and his wife provide other musicians with a spoken soundtrack to anticipate the Generalized Other according to George Herbert Mead , which can be freely edited. They initially publish the results themselves, some later appeared as re-issues on other labels. So far there have been around 120 collaborations by email with other musicians. Musicians from the industrial music environment are mainly involved, but a heavy metal band and an Afro-French rapper also worked with the text.
