Jean-Louis Garnick Philippe Costes (born May 13, 1954 ) is a French performance artist, singer, actor, director and author.

His provocative and excessive stage shows, videos and music are aimed specifically at disturbing the audience.

Critics see appeals to violence and racist tendencies in his works and cover him with lawsuits in court. Costes always asserts for himself that freedom of expression is an immutable right, even when artistic expression makes use of violence, shock, pornography or feces . In 2000 Costes was convicted in court of "inciting racial hatred".

Costes became known to a wide audience for his roles in Virginie Despentes ' feature film Baise-moi (Fuck me!) (2000) and Gaspar Noés Irréversible (2002). In addition, Costes has released various LPs, over 50 CDs, more than 20 cassettes, around 30 videos and some books. He worked with Lisa Suckdog and Commissioner Hjuler .

In July 2004 Costes worked under the direction of Noël Akchoté in the staging of Stefan F. Winter's opera Kastanienball in Munich's Prinzregententheater .
