Markus Kupferblum

Markus Kupferblum (born June 12, 1964 in Vienna ) is an Austrian opera and theater director, author and clown . He lives in Boston and Vienna and is the founder of the Total Theater in Vienna and an expert on commedia dell'arte and mask theater . From 2013 to 2017 he directed the music theater ensemble “Schlueterwerke” in Vienna, with which he regularly brought out cross-disciplinary productions.

Life

Kupferblum studied with Philippe Gaulier and Monika Pagneux in Paris and at New York University. He was assistant to Antoine Vitez and Achim Freyer.

He was awarded the Coup de Coeur at the Avignon Festival in 1992 for his production of Peer Gynt and in 1993 with the 1st Prix de l'Humour for his production of Les Mustaches de la Reine . In 2007 he received the Nestroy Prize of the City of Vienna.

Kupferblum is known for his interdisciplinary work between opera , circus , theater and film and for opening up new and unusual venues.

He staged at large opera houses and theaters as well as in various free structures in Austria, France, Germany, England, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, United States of America, Canada, Iran, Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, Peru, and Bolivia .

He teaches acting, directing and scenic writing a. a. at the University of Vienna , the University of Applied Arts Vienna, the Bavarian Theater Academy August Everding in Munich, the State Universities of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart and Frankfurt, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, and Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, USA, the Escuela Nacional del Teatro de Bolivia in Santa Cruz, Bolivia and at the Max Reinhardt Seminar .

In 2012, Kupferblum launched the European Theater Day of Tolerance together with Bernd C. Sucher , during which his memorandum against hatred and xenophobia is read out on February 1 in over 800 theaters across Europe, North and South America.

Kupferblum is Senior Lecturer for Opera Directing and Musical Dramatic Representation at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

He is a member of the International PEN Club.
