The Künstlerhaus Sootbörn is an artist and culture house in Hamburg-Niendorf , Sootbörn 22.

History of the building

The building was designed as the first middle school in Niendorf, Schnelsen and Lokstedt and built in the Bauhaus style from 1927 to 1929 by the architects Ernst and Wilhelm Langloh . At first 200 students learned there. In 1950 there were already 1,530 students. The students studied in shifts in the mornings, afternoons and even on weekends. The school building was called the "glass box".

As a result of the expansion of the Hamburg airport, which is now directly adjacent to the school premises, at the end of the 1950s, the school building moved directly into the approach path of runway 05. For reasons of flight safety , the two upper floors were demolished, only the ground floor remained. In any case, the lessons would soon have been impossible due to the increasing aircraft noise. The school moved to the Bondenwald location and is now called the Bondenwald Gymnasium . From 1962, the Hamburg school authorities only used the building as a warehouse for furniture and school supplies.

At the end of the 1980s, an artist group decided to turn the ruin into an artist's house. After lengthy negotiations with the school authorities, the building was handed over to the initiative in 1992, extensively renovated and developed into an artist's house with 14 studios. In addition to the artist studios, there is also the forum for artists' estates in the house. Among other things, it awards studio grants for two art college graduates for one year. The scholarship period ends with an exhibition.

From 2001 to 2006 the house was renovated again. In autumn 2003 the Sootbörn artist house celebrated its 10th anniversary.
