Pavel Richtr (* 1942 in Slaný ) is a Czech contemporary painter , graphic artist and lecturer in fine art.

Life

In his youth, Richtr had to blacken passages in school books in order to eliminate "capitalist thoughts" from them. This experience imprinted itself on him and influenced his further artistic life, so working with writing, dealing with the construction and de-construction of the word, became a decisive element of his work. Richtr studied from 1963 to 1965 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague . In addition to his visual arts, he was also active as an author, writer and dramaturge, but refrained from publication because he feared state censorship. In 1969, at the age of 27, he got permission to travel to the Federal Republic of Germany and from then on worked there as a freelance painter and graphic artist.

In 1984 he won a scholarship from the Künstlerhäuser Worpswede and in 1985 a first prize for painting in Cádiz . In 1994 he was given a teaching position at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg in the cultural studies department . In addition to his teaching activities, he is still active as a freelance artist. His works can be found in the collections of the National Gallery in Prague , State Library and Museum of Literature Strahov , Falckenberg Collection , City Collections of the City of Klatovy , Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Museum Villa Haiss . In 2011, part of the estate was pre-recorded in the forum for the estate of artists . Richtr lives in Hamburg and Prague.

Artistic direction

Richtr's main focus is scriptural art , i.e. he combines the written word with a free pictorial representation, which can sometimes conflict with the effect of the literal content. He deforms the texts, exaggerates or dampens the calligraphic rendering and in this way examines the effect of what is depicted with the word understood. Scriptural art is closely related to type painting and graffiti , but in contrast to the former, it is not handcrafted and the latter is not oriented towards pop culture , but is primarily classified in the direction of Abstract Expressionism .
