Music and artwork

Stylistic classification

Liles is musical self-taught and plays a. a. Guitar and piano . Nevertheless, his focus is on drones and sound collages . The basis of his compositions are mostly field recordings of various everyday noises, which are combined with the sounds of conventional or self-made instruments, as well as occasionally with singing and spoken words in several languages. The usual samples from radio, film and television are largely dispensed with.

Liles takes on the design of the sound carriers almost exclusively himself. He is influenced by surrealist artists such as Hans Bellmer , which is reflected in his own work. A frequently recurring visual motif are dolls , a preference that he shares with both Bellmer and the Czech animated filmmaker Jan Švankmajer , whom he admires . Furthermore, in Liles there are always depictions in the style of the Victorian or Edwardian era , in addition to animal and plant motifs, these are above all everyday bourgeois subjects.

Career and musical collaborations

Liles has been recording continuously since the mid-1980s, with various releases on tape and a few appearances in the early years . It was not until the second half of the 90s that he made his music available to a slightly larger audience through several CD-R releases. Collaborations with representatives of the electronics avant-garde such as Colin Potter, Jonathan Coleclough, The Hafler Trio , Bass Communion and Beequeen soon followed. It was through Potter that he met Steven Stapleton from Nurse with Wound , of which he has been a permanent member since 2005. With Tony Wakeford he ran the project The Wardrobe. Liles' most monumental work to date is the series "Vortex Vault" comprising twelve sound carriers, which has the color black in common in terms of title and design and on which guests such as Ernesto Tomasini , John Murphy and Kenji Siratori participated. His more recent work also includes a number of remix versions of earlier albums by the English band Current 93 , to whose lineup he is now part, as well as remixes for Pantaleimon , Mama Baer and Commissioner Hjuler as well as Cadaverous Condition.
