Archive Artist Publications

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Archive Artist Publications (AAP for short) collects, archives and documents international artist publications . It was initiated in the 1980s by Hubert Kretschmer, publisher, art educator and artist, who still privately runs the archive today. It is located in Munich , not far from the art area .

Interior view of the archive (partial view)

In contrast to classic libraries, the archive primarily collects artist books and artist magazines , as well as a wide range of different media, including so-called gray literature : publications produced with the simplest means, such as flyers, copied magazines or magazines reproduced with stencil prints (see also fanzine ), in small editions produced editions, book objects , object magazines and the like. Such publications by artists are often only accessible to a small group and are not archived permanently or in a central location. The Archive Artist Publications makes this area of artistic production publicly accessible, for example with exhibitions in large public libraries and institutions such as the Central Institute for Art History in Munich, the Art and Museum Library of the City of Cologne , the Regensburg State Library , the Kassel Art Temple or in the archive Gallery 2018/19 in the Haus der Kunst in Munich. In 2020, the archive organized the artist book fair Super Books in cooperation with Haus der Kunst, fructa space and the Academy of Fine Arts Munich .
