Many of Schmid's works are based on found photographs; in 1989 he coined the motto “No new photos until the old ones are used up” for his way of working. From 1982 to 2012, he collected all the photographs found in public spaces for his most extensive work, "Pictures from the Street". In his contribution to the book Joachim Schmid e le fotografie degli altri , the Italian artist and theoretician Franco Vaccari coined the generic term rag photography for Schmid's work.

Schmid's work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad and is in the collections of several museums ( Folkwang Museum Essen , Nederlands Fotomuseum Rotterdam , San Francisco Museum of Modern Art , Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam ). On the occasion of his first retrospective at the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery in Saratoga Springs, New York, the extensive monograph Joachim Schmid Photoworks 1982–2007 was published by Steidl Verlag .

From 1982 to 1987 Schmid was editor, publisher and main author of the magazine Fotokritik. After he discontinued the magazine, he published a variety of artist books. In 2009 he founded ABC Artists' Books Cooperative, an international network by and for artists who create print-on-demand artist books.

In 2014, the Hillmann Photography Initiative at the Carnegie Museum of Art produced the documentary Discarded: Joachim Schmid and the Anti-Museum about his work in the series The Invisible Photograph .
