The Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney (German: Museum for Contemporary Art Sydney ) is an art museum in Sydney . It opened in November 1991 .
building
The building was originally built for the Maritime Services Board , hence it is also called the MSB building . The government architect W.H. Withers began working on the designs in 1939. In 1940 planning was temporarily suspended due to Australia's participation in World War II . In 1944, the planning was continued under WDH Baxter. The foundation stone was laid in 1949 and the building was opened in 1952.
In 1989 the MSB moved due to lack of space. The government gave the building to the museum. Extensive restoration and renovation work began in 1990, financed by the University of Sydney and The Power Bequest . The renovation work was led by Andrew Anderson from Peddle Thorpe / John Holland Interiors .
In 2011/12, the museum was expanded by a new extension by the Australian architect Sam Marshall and enlarged by almost 50 percent. The opening took place on March 29, 2012.
