Sir Sidney Robert Nolan AC RA (born April 22, 1917 in Carlton , a district of Melbourne , Australia , † November 28, 1992 in London , England ) was an Australian painter and graphic artist . He was one of Australia's most important representatives of modern painting and printmaking after the Second World War .

Sidney Nolan studied art at the National Gallery Art School in Melbourne . He was a good friend of the art critics and promoters John Reed and Sunday Reed and is considered one of the leading figures of the artist group " Heide Circle ", which also included Albert Tucker , Joy Hester , Arthur Boyd and John Perceval .

In 1938 Nolan married his first wife, Elizabeth. This marriage shouldn't last long. After serving in the Second World War, Nolan moved to the Reeds' house, called “Heide”, near Melbourne (now the seat of the Heide Museum of Modern Art ). In 1948, Nolan married John Reed's sister, Cynthia Reed . In 1978 he married Mary Boyd , the former wife of John Perceval . He studied for some time at Atelier 17 in Paris with Stanley William Hayter .

His best known paintings from Australia are a series of pictures from 1946 to 1947 about the mugger Ned Kelly in the Australian outback .

In 1950 Sidney Nolan moved to London , England , where he lived and worked until his death. In 1959 Nolan took part in documenta 2 in Kassel . His work also includes theater decorations and book illustrations .

In 1985 he was elected an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters . In 1991 he was accepted into the Royal Academy of Arts .
