Maningrida is a self-governing Aboriginal community in the middle of Arnhem Land in Australia's Northern Territory .

location

Maningrida is located approximately 500 km east of Darwin and 300 km northeast of Jabiru . In the north, the community borders the Arafura Sea near the mouth of the Liverpool River . The Kunibídji tribe are the long -established landowners. The name Maningrida is an English version of the Kunibídji name Manayingkarírra , which means something like the place where the dream changes its shape in German. The city is inhabited by around 2,300 people. The Maningrida Jet Center , the Maningrida Rat Inc. , the Maningrida Progress Association , Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation and the Maningrida Arts and Culture Artists Association play a major role in political and economic life .

history

The Maningrida community was founded shortly after World War II . Officers Sid Kyle-Little and Jack Doolan were sent here by the government to set up a trading and supply establishment. This was converted into a permanent welfare settlement by Dave and Ingrid Drysdale in 1957, in order to counteract the migration of the Aborigines living here to Darwin. Patrols went out to get the natives to settle in Maningrida.

On the night of April 24, 2006, Maningrida was streaked north by Cyclone Monica , one of the heaviest cyclones to hit Australia. The community did not get the full force of the category 5 cyclone, so that the infrastructure was only slightly damaged, if at all.

Culture

The area of north-central Arnhem Land where Maningrida is located extends from Marrkolidjban in east Kunwinjku Land in the west, to Berriba in Danbon Land in the south, to well beyond Yinangarnduwa or Cape Stewart in the east. If you take the number of inhabitants, this is probably the largest multilingual community in the world. The linguistic diversity is also expressed through the multitude of religious ceremonies and rites in design, music and dance. Here Ndjébbana, East Kunwinjku, Kune, Rembarrnga, Dangbon / Dalabon, Nakkara, Gurrgoni, Djinang, Wurlaki, Ganalbingu, Gupapuyngu, Kunbarlang, Gun-nartpa, Burarra and English are spoken. The residents are required to learn at least three of these languages.

Australian Aboriginal actor and dancer David Gulpilil , known from films like Walkabout and Australia , was born and raised in Maningrida.
