Tim Johnson (artist)

Tim Johnson (* 1947 in Sydney ) is an Australian painter and installation artist .

life and work

Tim Johnson traveled through numerous countries and studied Buddhism intensively. He worked as a poet and songwriter, mandala painter, sculptor of large steel sculptures, photographer and performance artist. In the 1970s and 1980s, Johnson painted the greats of rock music and punk. Tim Johnson later lived in Papunya with the Aborigines , where artists such as Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri introduced him to dot painting and indigenous mythology.

Tim Johnson mainly paints with acrylic on canvas. Tibetan characters, Japanese mangas, Aboriginal dot painting, Buddhist, Chinese and medieval Christian motifs can be seen on his paintings and occasionally a flying saucer.

Johnson regularly collaborates with other artists on his paintings, as is customary with the Aborigines. He had the American Daniel Bogunovic , the Korean artist Yiwon Park and the Tibetan artist Karma Phuntsok participate in his works .

Tim Johnson exhibits in museums and biennials both in Australia and internationally. In 1992 he was a participant in documenta IX in Kassel.
