Pan Sonic was a Finnish electronic music project that ran from 1993 to 2010 and performed as Panasonic from its inception until 1998 .

history

Established as Panasonic

The project was founded in the summer of 1993 by Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen , who met in 1989 in the Turku art and techno scene . Through their mutual acquaintance Tommi Grönlund , founder of the young experimental techno label Sähkö , Sami Salo joined as a third member at the beginning of 1994 . In the same year, Panasonic released their first EP with an edition of probably around 1000 copies, today a sought-after collector's item.

The name of the project goes back to a light panel with the logo of the Panasonic Corporation that was hung by the artist Daniel Pflumm in the Berlin electric mini club.

Foreign appearances

In the autumn of that year, Panasonic played abroad for the first time, namely in London . Because of this gig (later released as Live in London ) they got a record deal with Blast First , a Mute Records sub -label . With their first album, Vakio, which was released there (originally a set of four 10 ″ records), they became known internationally in 1995.

After recording the EP Osasto in 1996, Salo left Panasonic in the middle of the year, partly because he had to do his military service. Vainio and Väisänen released their first album as a duo, Kulma , in early 1997 . At this time the two began various collaborations, for example with FM Einheit ( Einstürzende Neubauten ) as VVE, with Bruce Gilbert ( Wire ) as IBM and with Alan Vega from Suicide . The latter in particular led to some success through publications in 1998, but at the same time it was the end of the name Panasonic, which the project had carried for almost five years.

After changing its name to Pan Sonic

After a warning from the Japanese electronics company of the same name, the group had to change its name to "Pan Sonic". In allusion to the "dropped" letters, they titled the album A , released in February 1999, and the 12 " B that followed .

After the album Aaltopiiri , which was released in 2001 , Pan Sonic released two live albums from their early days in limited editions of 1500 pieces each and then took a break from publishing, which they only ended in 2004 with the four-CD box Kesto .

Her album Gravitoni was announced as her last and was released in July 2010 by Blast First Petite . Already in January 2010 Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen announced through their record company that they would no longer appear as Pan Sonic after this CD.

style

Pan Sonic are known for extremely minimal, rhythmic music, with extremely reduced structure and often relatively pure sounds. The "physicality" of their sound (very low / very high / very loud / very long / very fast / very slow) is an essential part of their music and clearly reveals the influences from industrial of the 1980s ( Throbbing Gristle , Einstürzende Neubauten , SPK ) as well as the American electronic band Suicide , Acid Techno , Jamaican dub and ska as well as the musique concrète composer Pierre Henry .

With this style, Pan Sonic have become pioneers of Clicks & Cuts , whereby, unlike usual in the genre, they use almost no digital equipment for sound synthesis, their instruments mostly consist of analog sound generators that intermesh modularly and specially designed by Jari Lehtinen Requirement. Images of these devices are occasionally found in publications.

From the beginning, Pan Sonic had a strong affinity with the art world, so they often played at exhibitions or created music for fashion shows (e.g. for Comme des Garçons ). In addition to their activity as a duo, both are also active as soloists and in other joint projects.
