Stomu Takeishi
Stomu Takeishi ( Japanese 武 石 務 , Takeishi Tsutomu ; * 1964 in Mito ) is a Japanese bass guitarist of creative jazz .
Takeishi started out as a koto player. In 1983 he moved to the United States to study at Berklee College of Music . In 1986 he went to New York City . There he made a name for himself on Fretless Bass as a member of Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band , Henry Threadgill's Make a Move and Zooid , Myra Melford's Crush Trio (with drummer Kenny Wollesen ), and Erik Friedlander's Topaz (with his brother Satoshi Takeishi as a percussionist). With most of these groups he also performed in Europe. He also played with Don Cherry , Dave Liebman , Randy Brecker , Wynton Marsalis , Cuong Vu and Butch Morris . In 2009 and 2010, Takeishi led the Down Beat critics poll as Rising Star with the electric bassists .
