High School for the Performing and Visual Arts
The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (or: HSPVA ) is a high school ( Houston Independent School District ) that was built in Houston / Texas in 1971 . It was built where the Congregation Beth Israel previously stood. In 1981 the school moved to 4001 Stanford Street, where the former Montrose Elementary School stood.
In the 1990s the school moved to the downtown area of the city. In 2005 the school was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School . There were plans to build a new building district that would include a theater for 2,000 spectators, faculties and a recording studio , but the project was rejected in 2007.
Classification
The school includes grades 9 to 12 and is divided into five artistic areas. These are instrumental music, singing, dancing, acting and the visual arts. Shortly before the end of each semester , students are required to prepare a portfolio in which they have to specify, among other things, the area in which they want to be taught in the next semester.
Student recordings
The school mainly accepts students after the 8th grade of St. Mark's Episcopal School, Presbyterian School, River Oaks Baptist School, John Paul II School and the Annunciation Orthodox School . Well-known exceptions are the singer Beyoncé Knowles and actress Renée O'Connor .
