Houston Independent School District ( HISD for short ) is the school district to which all public schools in the city of Houston, in southern Texas, belong. All schools in a school district in the United States typically have similar days off and school rules.

HISD is the largest school district in Texas and the seventh largest in the United States. It includes elementary schools (grades K-5), middle schools (grades 6–8), and high schools (grades 9–12).
