Walter Dyett

Walter Henri Dyett (born January 11, 1901 - November 17, 1969 ) was an American violinist and music teacher. As music director at the "DuSable High School" in Chicago , he taught many students who became well-known musicians.

biography

After studying music at the University of California, Berkeley , California , he went to Chicago and led an Army Band, where he was nicknamed "Captain Dyett". In 1931 he became an assistant at the "Wendell Phillips High School" in Chicago before moving to the newly founded DuSable High School as music director.

His program at DuSable quickly gained an excellent reputation, especially thanks to his annual benefit revue "Hi Jinks". It attracted some of the best musicians in Chicago, including:
