Nessa Records is an American jazz - label , which in 1967 by Chuck Nessa in Chicago was founded.

History of the label

Chuck Nessa (* 1944) met Bob Koester, the owner of Delmark Records and the Chicago Jazz Record Mart, in 1966 , who offered him the job of manager of the record store. He accepted this on the condition that Koester could also record his own jazz records. In 1966 he produced several sessions for Delmark with the band projects of AACM members, such as Roscoe Mitchell's Sound , Joseph Jarman's Song For , Muhal Richard Abrams ' Levels and Degrees of Light . In 1967 he founded his own label Nessa Records and began releasing long-playing records. In the mid-1970s, Nessa worked with the Chicago Jazz Institute, which organized the Chicago Jazz Fest . In the mid 1980s, he and his family moved to Whitehall, Michigan. After a few years of reduced activity by the label due to economic difficulties, Nessa began to publish his extensive archive material on compact disc format in the 1990s , such as early recordings by Roscoe Mitchell with the Art Ensemble of Chicago in a 5-CD box in 1967 as well as new material from Anthony Braxton and trumpeter John McDonough .

The label released music by Lester Bowie , Roscoe Mitchell , the Art Ensemble of Chicago ( People in Sorrow ), Von Freeman , Warne Marsh , Ben Webster , Air , Lucky Thompson , Charles Tyler , Wadada Leo Smith , the NRG Ensemble , Eddie Johnson , Fred Anderson and by Hal Russell / Mars Williams and the Spontaneous Music Ensemble .

Nessa also worked with Dr Robert E. Sunenblick of Uptown Records; the reissue label released the historical recordings In the Land of Oo-Blah-Dee 1947-1953 by tenor saxophonist Allen Eager and Charles 'Baron' Mingus, West Coast, 1945-49 , compiled by Charles Mingus in the early '78 .
