Air or (from 1982) New Air was an American jazz trio that was nationally active from 1975 to 1987.

Air was founded by saxophonist Henry Threadgill , bassist Fred Hopkins, and drummer Steve McCall to perform at Scott Joplin memorials ; the group was then part of the sextet of Muhal Richard Abrams . It was called Air because the three musicians all belonged to the "air signs" astrologically, and in 1975 began to perform regularly. For health reasons, McCall was replaced by Pheeroan akLaff (who was later replaced by Andrew Cyrille ). Musically, Air was based on the aesthetics of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) . After the Art Ensemble of Chicago, it was the second AACM group to become internationally known.
