The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble is a North American jazz ensemble that has been in existence for more than 35 years .
Band history
In 1973 the group, in which musicians from the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians have played, was first formed by Kahil El'Zabar in Chicago to play “trans-African music” with her. After a guest stay in Ghana , El'Zabar developed their concept in order to “combine traditional African sensitivity with contemporary forms of Western music, in which black musicians play a different key than on the continent”.
In the context of this “trans-African music”, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble combines the approach and heritage of the music tradition of Africa with the innovative achievements and expressive possibilities of creative jazz . “The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble is strongly rhythmic, percussive and groovy, makes music between lyrical-playful and impulsive, between tradition and avant-garde, between bop and free, but remains stuck in every single note of the Afro-American tradition. Against this background, the musical statements of Kahil El'Zabar are among the strongest and most expressive in jazz. ”Since 1977 the band has also been on the road outside of North America and has been particularly successful in Europe; she released her albums on smaller European labels.
Most of the time she worked as a trio in the line-up of percussionist, woodwind, brass. As in the beginning and between 1998 and 2000, the ensemble has existed in an enlarged formation since 2006.
In recent years, individual songs of the ensemble were also a remix subject (such as IG Culture, Osunlade , Henrik Schwarz , Charles Webster, Djinji Brown or Kemit Sources.)
