Eberhard Westphal (born October 17, 1934 in Berlin ; † September 13, 1998 in Béziers ) was a German painter and set designer .

Life

Eberhard Westphal was the son of a Berlin master painter and from 1955 to 1958 attended Werner Kleinschmidt's stage design class at the master school for arts and crafts in Berlin. In 1959 he married the book and art dealer Marianne Lemberg. After the death of his wife in 1960 he moved to Düsseldorf , where he married the ceramicist Margrit Käsch. He worked as a freelance set designer in the Kongresshalle Berlin (1958), Studio Diogenes, Berlin (1962–1967), the Kammerspiele Düsseldorf (1970), the Atlantik Theater (1980), for the Westphalian State Theater Castrop-Rauxel (1984 / 1985) and as a painter. From 1984 he spent the summer months in the south of France with his wife Margrit. In 1989 they moved their place of residence to where Westphal lived until his death in 1998. He left a son from his first and a son from his second marriage.

Westphal's painterly work falls into two epochs after his studies. During his time in Düsseldorf he painted a large series of "medials", strongly centered abstract compositions in oil or tempera based on circular shapes with subtle color gradations. These works were bought for Artotek by the Düsseldorf Cultural Office, among others.

In his second period, which corresponds to his time in France, he painted abstract watercolors that incorporated elements of the sky and the landscape of his new home. These works were exhibited during his lifetime in exhibitions at the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf and the Goethe-Institut in Nancy in 1986, in Bad Hersfeld and Bédarieux in 1991 in Soest in 1994 and in a large retrospective after his death in the Stadtmuseum in Düsseldorf in 2001.
