The 29 WWE SummerSlam 2016 was a wrestling event of WWE , as per view Pay and on the WWE Network aired. It took place on August 21, 2016 at the Barclays Center in New York City , New York , United States . It was the 29th edition of SummerSlam since 1988. The event took place for the second time after 2015 in the Barclays Center and for the fifth time after 1988, 1991, 1998 and 2015 in New York City and in New York State.

These resulted from the storylines shown on Raw and SmackDown Live , the weekly shows of the WWE, in the weeks leading up to SummerSlam . The main fight was a singles match between Raw belonging Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton belonging to SmackDown Live .

Notes on the event
- The following title changes occurred during the event:
- Charlotte defeated Sasha Banks in a singles match to win the WWE Women's Championship ;
- Finn Bálor defeated Seth Rollins in a singles match to win the previously vacant WWE Universal Championship .
- During the match for the WWE Tag Team Championship , Big E, the third member of The New Day returned after a week-long break and helped his allies Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods defend their title against Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows by attacking them.
- Nikki Bella returned during the event after a month-long hiatus due to a real-life neck injury.
- The match between Rusev and Roman Reigns for the WWE United States Championship could not start after the opponents had previously attacked each other.
- Brock Lesnar inflicted a laceration on his head during the match against Randy Orton , so that the referee stopped the match. Then the commissioner of SmackDown Live, Shane McMahon came into the ring to protect Orton from further attacks by Lesnar, after which he was also attacked by Lesnar.
