Arroyo Grande is a place in San Luis Obispo County in the US state of California , United States , with 16,700 inhabitants (as of 2006). The municipality has a size of 14.7 km².

Arroyo Grande is located on the Central Coast of California in the United States, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The city covers 5.45 square miles and is at an altitude of 114 feet. Temperatures rarely drop below −1.7 degrees Celsius in winter, and temperatures above 28.3 degrees Celsius are rare in summer. Arroyo Grande is 95 miles from Interstate 5.
history
The first inhabitants of the Arroyo Grande Valley were Chumash Indians, who traded extensively with other Indian tribes far away. The first Europeans came with the Spanish explorer Juan Cabrillo . The San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Mission was located nearby and expanded its agricultural activities into the area. The village of Arroyo Grande was founded because of the particularly fertile soil. The Spanish name means "wide river bed".
On July 10, 1911, Arroyo Grande was granted city rights.
