history
California City has its origins in 1958 when real estate developer and sociology professor Nat Mendelsohn bought 80,000 acres (320 km²) of land in the Mojave Desert in order to plan California's next major city. He designed a model town around a centrally located park with an 11 hectare artificial lake. He hoped that one day it would overtake Los Angeles . However, growth remained well below expectations. A road network of crumbling asphalt roads and sand tracks, anticipating future expansion, is still recognizable today, but only the town center, which is grouped around the centrally located park, has been settled. Satellite photos underline its claim to be California's third largest city in terms of area. California City was founded on December 10, 1965. One could see this as an example of a failed planned city .
The large network of unfinished streets has now developed into a meeting place for off-road bikers and off-road vehicle drivers.
