Mojave is a census-designated place in Kern County , California , United States . The 2010 census found a population of 4,238. Mojave is 80 km (50 miles) east of Bakersfield , California. The city is located in the southwest corner of the Mojave Desert .

history

The place was founded in 1876 as a construction warehouse for the company Southern Pacific Railroad , when they built the rail link between Los Angeles and San Francisco . The day the first passenger arrived in Mojave, August 8, 1876, is known as the city's birthday. The train connection to Bakersfield runs over the Tehachapi Loop in the Tehachapi Mountains .

The city also served as the construction center for the Los Angeles Aqueduct. The first post office also opened in 1876. The city was named after Yuma-speaking Yuma Indians who lived in the southwestern United States . Aviation has played an important role in the history of Mojave. The developer of aircraft prototypes Scaled Composites is also based in Mojave .

The city has an unoccupied platform with no ticket booth, the nearest occupied train station is in Bakersfield .
