Scaled Composites is a US company that develops aircraft prototypes. The company is based in Mojave , California , at the Mojave Air & Space Port there . It is part of the aviation, space and defense company Northrop Grumman .
history
The company was founded in 1982 by Burt Rutan , a well-known aerospace engineer. In 1974 he founded the company Rutan Aircraft Factory . Scaled Composites has been owned by Northrop Grumman since 2007 .
The company's vice president was Michael Melvill , the first SpaceShipOne pilot . Steve Fossett , who has made a name for himself with many record flights, was also a co-owner of the company. Burt Rutan left the company on March 31, 2011, but is still listed on their website as an emeritus .
