The Rutan Aircraft Factory (RAF) was a company founded in 1974 by aeronautical engineer Burt Rutan . His first aircraft, the VariViggen , had its maiden flight back in 1972 . With the company, Rutan wanted to advance the development of the VariViggen on the one hand, and enable the construction of new aircraft on the other. Around 600 construction plans for the VariViggen alone were sold by 1977 for self-construction.
One of the company's greatest successes was the construction of the Voyager, the first propeller-driven aircraft that circled the world in 1986 without refueling .
In 1982 Rutan founded Scaled Composites . The Rutan Aircraft Factory still existed several years later. After the sales stop of the aircraft plans, it was to provide support for a limited time in the construction of the aircraft that had been started. Most recently, the company was only run by volunteers. From 2008 the company's homepage was no longer accessible.
