The Rutan VariViggen is a canard aircraft developed by Burt Rutan . The name is based on the Saab JA 37 Viggen .

history

Rutan began designing his first aircraft while he was still at university. In 1972 it took off for the first time. That same year, Rutan presented its new aircraft at the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh , Wisconsin .

In 1974 he founded the Rutan Aircraft Factory , with which he wanted to continue the development of the VariViggen as well as develop new models.

In total, the Rutan Aircraft Factory sold over 60 DIY kits of this type. About 20 were actually completed and flown, of which fewer than five are now still in service.

The VariViggen bears the internal name Model 27 . The VariViggen SP, Model 32 , has, among other things, larger wings and winglets . In 1988 Rutan donated the prototype of the VariViggen to the EAA Air Venture Museum in Oshkosh.
