Jean Delvin

Jean-Joseph Delvin (* 1853 in Ghent , Belgium ; † 1922 there ) was a Belgian painter. The focus of his paintings was primarily on animal motifs, especially horses.

Career

Jean-Joseph Delvin was born in Flanders during the reign of King Leopold I and grew up there. Nothing is known about his youth. After he had decided on a career as an artist, he began to attend the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, where he studied under the artist Théodore-Joseph Canneel . In addition, he worked during this time in the studio of Jean-François Portaels in Brussels . André Cluysenaar and Jacques de Lalaing were among his fellow students. He later went on study trips to France and Spain . For many years he shared a small workshop in a garden shed with Gustave Den Duyts .

In 1883 he was invited to join the secessionist group Société des Vingt together with James Ensor , Fernand Khnopff , Théo van Rysselberghe and several others , from which he left a few years later, in 1886. He was also a member of La Libre Esthétique and Kunst van Heden in Antwerp . Around this time he began teaching at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. From 1902 to 1913 he was director there. The following years were overshadowed by the First World War .

His many well-known students included Albert Baertsoen , Gustave de Smet , Frans Masereel and George Minne .
