Albert Baertsoen (born January 9, 1866 in Gent , Belgium ; † June 9, 1922 there ) was a Belgian impressionist .

Career

Albert Baertsoen, son of a wealthy mill owner, was born in Flanders during the reign of King Leopold II . Nothing is known about his youth. After choosing an artistic career, he began to attend the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, where he studied under the artists Gustave Den Duyts and Jean Delvin . He earned recognition for his works, which he showed at exhibitions in 1887. One of these works was The Scheldt, an early and important work of his, which was exhibited in Dendermonde . Baertsoen then studied in the Paris studio of the French painter Alfred Philippe Roll . In the following years he exhibited his works in several salons in the cities of Paris, Brussels , Ghent and Antwerp .

In 1894 Albert Baertsoen and several other artist colleagues got together. They founded the Cercle des Beaux-Arts d'Ostende. Their names were James Ensor , Marie Van Halme-Levy , Emile Spilliaert , Félix Buelens , Marthe Vlaminck-Dufour , Achille Vlaminck , Auguste Musin , Franz Charlet , Charles-Louis Bellis and Henri Permeke . The society existed for only two years before it was absorbed by the Ostend Center de Art in 1896 .

From 1914 to 1919 he stayed in London ( United Kingdom ) and waited for the outcome of the First World War . Eventually he returned to Ghent in 1919, where he became a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium . In the same year he was elected to the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts . In 1920 an exhibition of his works took place in the gallery Georges Petit in Paris. The following year, 1921, the Georges Giroux gallery held a retrospective of works from throughout his career. He died in Gent on June 9, 1922, at the age of 56.

Baertsoen was active as a painter, but also made etchings and drawings. He chose rocks, buildings in the city, river docks, small boats, quiet streets and canals at dusk or dusk as motifs. He created many of his paintings while living in his hometown of Ghent. In this context, The Thaw, which is an extremely realistic depiction of a winter day and depicts the banks of the Leie , is now regarded as his masterpiece. As with his other paintings, he uses a subtle glow in the representation of the softness of the snow or softened the harsh lines of the buildings. The muted colors lend his works contemplative depths. Ghent in the Evening and Barges in the Snow are two other widely recognized paintings by him.
