Michel Félix Buelens (born February 18, 1850 in Etterbeek , Belgium , † March 24, 1921 in Ostend , Belgium) was a Belgian impressionist .

Career

Michel Félix Buelens was born during the reign of King Leopold I in Etterbeek, a suburb of Brussels . Nothing is known about his youth. After he decided on a career as an artist, he studied at an art academy in Brussels. Before that he met the Belgian painter James Ensor in Ostend in 1885 . The rest of their lives had a good friendship between them. After finishing his studies, Buelens settled in Ostend. There he ran a guesthouse and a museum, which he founded with Henri Permeke , James Ensor and Emile Spilliaert . All were members of the Cercle des Beaux-Arts d'Ostende, which was founded in 1894 and lasted only two years before being absorbed by the Ostend Center de Art in 1896 . Although Buelens quickly gained public attention as a painter, he remained primarily an artist who painted only for himself. His still lifes are kept in a bold and robust impressionism. In his works he used delicate color tones with bright red, green and yellow. His color virtuosity was similar to that of James Ensor.
