Jean-François Portaels (Jan Frans Portaels, born April 3, 1818 in Vilvoorde , † February 8, 1895 in Schaerbeek ) was a Belgian orientalist painter and art teacher.

Portaels studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Brussels with François-Joseph Navez , the then director of the academy. As a student he set up his own studio.

Portaels traveled to Paris in 1841, studied with Paul Delaroche and won the Prix ​​de Rome in 1842 . He spent July and August 1843 in Florence , then he stayed in Rome until 1845 . In the following years he made numerous trips, including to Morocco , where he stayed until 1847, and to Italy , Greece , Algeria , Egypt , Lebanon , Spain , Hungary and Norway . In 1852 he married the daughter of his professor, François-Joseph Navez.

A recurring theme in his work is oriental and exotic scenes, especially oriental women, but Portaels also painted biblical scenes and portraits of celebrities. Two of his pictures are in the St. James' Church in Brussels.

Portaels was director of the Ghent Academy from 1847 to 1849 and later, from 1878 to 1895, director of the Brussels Academy. He also taught in his own studio. His students included Emile Wauters , Théo van Rysselberghe , David Oyens , Pieter Oyens , Jean Delville , Fernand Cormon , Xavier Mellery , the sculptor Charles van der Stappen and the architect Charles Licot .

Jean-François Portaels died in Schaerbeek and was buried in the Laeken cemetery.
