David Oyens (born July 29, 1842 in Amsterdam , † February 11, 1902 in Brussels ) was a Dutch painter. Together with his twin brother Pieter Oyens , they were among the most original Dutch painters of the 19th century.

They were born as two of the ten children of the Amsterdam banker Henry Gerard Oijens (1804–1886) and Ursula Magdalena Christina Metzler (1805–1868).

At the age of eight, the Oyens brothers began drawing lessons with the Amsterdam painter Johan Hendrik Veldhuyzen. In 1860 they began their painting studies at the evening courses at the Academy of Arts in Brussels . Two years later they became students in the studio of the orientalist Jean-François Portaels .

The very similar Oyens brothers shared their studio at Sint-Joost-ten-Node. They painted in the same style and their works were difficult to distinguish.

The first success came in 1875. Critic Camille Lemonnier praised her work and leading collectors began buying her paintings. In 1880 David won a gold medal at the Brussels Triennale Salon, and other works by the brothers also received recognition.

Both brothers mainly painted subjects from their immediate surroundings and daily life. Her painting was free from academism and sentimentalism , often humorous, influenced by the Brussels Société libre des beaux-arts . Both painted many portraits, and to a lesser extent still lifes and interiors, David also some landscapes.

David Oyens married Catharina Elisabeth "Betsy" Voûte in 1866, their daughter only survived a year, his brother only married 27 years later, at the age of 51, shortly afterwards he was hit by a stroke and he died in 1894, one month before the birth of his daughter.

David Oyens and his wife settled in Arnhem in the late 1890s , but he longed for Brussels. At the turn of the century he went back to Brussels, but died shortly afterwards and was buried next to his brother Peter.
