Jean Delville

Jean Delville (born January 19, 1867 in Leuven , † 1953 in Forest near Brussels) was a Belgian painter , occultist and theosophist .

life and work

Delville studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels . He then took on teaching activities at this academy and in Glasgow . He spent long periods of study in Paris , Rome and London .

The occult influenced from three directions the creation of Delville. First, his acquaintance with Edouard Schuré around 1884. Second, he met Joséphin Péladan in Paris around 1887/88 , exhibited between 1892 and 95 pictures in the Salon de la Rose-Croix founded by Péladan , but separated from him again in 1895 . And thirdly, membership in the Adyar Theosophical Society (Adyar-TG), which he joined in the late 1890s. In 1910 he became secretary of the Adyar-TG for Belgium.
