Charles van der Stappen (born December 19, 1843 in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode / Sint-Joost-ten-Node , † October 21, 1910 in Brussels ) was a Belgian sculptor .

Life

Charles van der Stappen attended the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels from 1859 to 1868 . He worked for some time in Paris and made a study trip to Italy .

From 1894 to 1898 he began working with Constantin Meunier on the design of the Botanical Garden in Brussels . In 1898 van der Stappen won the great gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition .

He became director of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. Helene Scholz-Zelezny and Rik Wouters were among his students .

The young Stefan Zweig visited Charles van der Stappen's studio in August 1902 while Émile Verhaeren was sitting on this model and described his impression in 1917 in the essay Memories of Emile Verhaeren and later in his autobiography The World of Yesterday , Chapter Universitas Vitae .
