Abbeyshrule with the Royal Canal

Abbeyshrule ( Irish : Mainistir Shrúthla ; German about "monastery on the flow") is a place in County Longford , Ireland . It is roughly between Mullingar and Ballymahon . The Inny River and the Royal Canal cross about 1 km northeast, with an aqueduct leading the canal across the river. There is also a small inland port on the canal in the village.

In the sacristy of the Catholic Church a nearly 1 m high cross is kept, which originally belonged to Abbeyshrule Abbey . It is an Irish national monument . The remains of the monastery founded as a subsidiary of Mellifont Abbey are 300 m south of the village.

There is also an airfield for small planes.

The place almost doubled in size in the mid-2000s, thanks mainly to new roads in the region. The area is sparsely populated and the individual farms are far apart.
