James McLoughlin

James McLoughlin (born April 9, 1929 in Galway , † November 25, 2005 there ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Galway and Kilmacduagh in Ireland .

Life

McLoughlin attended the Patrician Brothers Primary School on Nun's Island and then St. Mary's College in Galway. After studying Catholic theology and philosophy in Maynooth , he was ordained a priest on June 20, 1954 . He taught at St. Mary's College in Galway and became Diocesan Secretary in 1965. In 1983 he became pastor of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Galway.

On February 10, 1993, McLoughlin was appointed Bishop of Galway and Kilmacduagh and Apostolic Administrator of Kilfenora by Pope John Paul II after his predecessor Eamon Casey resigned as bishop there. He was ordained episcopal on March 28, 1993 by the Archbishop of Armagh , Cardinal Cahal Daly . Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland, Archbishop Emanuele Gerada , and the Archbishop of Tuam , Joseph Cassidy .

He has chaired the Finance and General Planning Committee of the Irish Bishops' Conference .

On May 23, 2005, his age-related resignation was accepted by Pope Benedict XVI. granted. He was succeeded by Bishop Martin Drennan . McLoughlin then lived in Claregalway and died on November 25, 2005 in Galway hospital. He was buried in Galway Cathedral.
