Lisdoonvarna ( Irish: Lios Dúin Bhearna , pronunciation : [ ˈl´is ˌduːn´ ˈv´ɑrnə ]) is located in the northwest of County Clare , is the capital of the Burren and has 829 inhabitants (Census 2016). Here is the only spa of Ireland , the radioactive thermal water with sulfur , magnesium , iron and iodine contains. The place name is derived from the 1.5 km distant Dun Lissateeaun (Irish Lios an tSidheain - hill of the fairies).

history

Lisdoonvarna essentially grew around its healing mineral springs in the early 19th century. The fountains are on the road to Ennistymon , between Sulfur Hill and Black Head. There were four wells:

  1. Copperas Well is closed. The water should help against skin diseases.
  2. The magnesium oxide and iron source is open all year round.
  3. The double fountain for iron and sulfur baths is on the golf course.
  4. The sulfur fountain is at the foot of the hill.

The spring water contains iodine, which can be found in large quantities in the sulfur fountain. In addition, many mineral salts are dissolved in the water. Lisdoonvarna was the most visited place before it was officially confirmed as a health resort in 1845. The population developed from 254 in 1841 to 890 in 1996 (the previous maximum) to (after the last count) in 2011 as indicated in the info box.

Before it was discovered as a health resort, there were only a few isolated huts at this point. However, the numerous ancient sites and historical remains in the vicinity of the place testify to early human settlement. Ring-shaped protective structures ( ring forts ) date from the Iron Age and the late Middle Ages .

Architecture and culture

Lisdoonvarna Castle

Lisdoonvarna Castle was once a striking building in the area. A preserved corner pillar of the castle refers to the year of construction in 1619. For a long time it was owned by the noble family O'Davorens, who were considered very proud and tyrannical.

The Spectacle Bridge

The Aille, fed by the Kilmoon and the Gowlaun, is a river that has worked its way through a 25 m deep bottleneck. The main road to Ennistymon crosses the Glasses Bridge with an imaginative architecture.

The lower part is a normal bridge with a round arch. Because of the enormous depth of the bottleneck, more height was required to reach street level. A large circular opening was built above the arch, which gives the bridge its name.

Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival

The harvest festival of Lisdoonvarna is known far beyond the country's borders, because at the same time the place Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival held the largest marriage market in Europe.

At this time, thousands of singles are in town every year to find love for life.

The festival is particularly popular with single Americans and British women, and is now increasingly popular with divorced and widowed people. The tradition as a matchmaker goes back to the middle of the 19th century. The grandfather of Willie Daly, the organizer of the festival at the beginning of the 21st century, founded the marriage market, which took place at the same time as the large farmers and livestock market in the city. At that time there were many farmers from remote parts of the country in the city and this gave young farmers the opportunity to look for a bride.

Lisdoonvarna Music Festival

From 1978 to 1983, the Lisdoonvarna Music Festival took place several times , at which many Irish folk artists of name and reputation performed. The festival was revived in 2003, but - despite the retained name of the Lisdoonvarna Festival - it took place in Dublin. Christy Moore immortalized the festival in his song Lisdoonvarna .
