Almucantarat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Almukantarat , also Almukantarate or height parallel , is a term from astronomy and describes each circle of the celestial sphere that is parallel to the horizon . Originally the term comes from the Arabic word al-muqntarat (from qantara - "to curve like a bow") and was introduced by Hermann von Reichenau ( 1013 - 1054 ).

The almucantarat denotes a line of equal zenith distance , so all points on this circle enclose the same angle with the zenith at the observation site.
